The Price of Sugar
This documentary is a call for action, a call I suspect will resonate with all Casa Naranja devotees.

"The Price of Sugar" follows a charismatic Spanish priest, Father Christopher Hartley, as he organizes some of this hemisphere's poorest people and challenges the powerful interests that profit from their work. When he arrives in the Dominican Republic, he's warned against entering the sugar plantations where most of his parishioners live. Breaking a centuries old taboo, he discovers shocking examples of modern-day slavery intrinsic to the global sugar trade.

On an island known for tropical beauty, tourists flock to escape winter and relax with little knowledge that just a few miles away thousands of dispossessed Haitians are toiling away in unseen plantations harvesting sugarcane most of which ends up in the United States. Cutting cane by machete, they work 14 hour days, 7 days a week frequently without access to decent housing, electricity, clean water, education, healthcare and adequate nutrition. Often they are stateless, with neither Dominican nor Haitian identity and virtually invisible in the eyes of the law.

“The Price of Sugar” raises key questions about where the products we consume originate, at what cost they are produced and ultimately, where our responsibility lies.

Giving Back
Doing good by doing well.

Casa Naranja brings exciting content to its members. Casa Naranja is also dedicated to bringing a measure of hope and good will to those in need. Each quarter we will chose a worthy non-profit and we pledge to donate 10% of our revenues to them. This quarter we will be partnering with Pro Mujer, a women's development organization providing Latin America's poorest women with the means to build livelihoods for themselves and futures for their families through micro-lending, business training, and healthcare support. Please join us by visiting their site at www.promujer.org with the option of donating directly.

Study Buddy

Homeroom with your crush. Lunch with pallies. PE with your BFF. School wasn’t all bad, ’cause it meant spending time with friends.

But it also meant homework. Sitting alone at the kitchen table, diagramming sentences and multiplying fractions, was a fate worse than being asked to the big dance by a big nerd (not that that ever happened to you). It certainly would have been more fun had you had a study buddy.

And today’s kids do: StudyBuddy.com is a free homework-help search engine from AOL (No AOL membership required). Designed for grades K-12, the site comprises hundreds of thousands of web pages from the most trusted sources selected by a team of teachers and librarians. Searches can be filtered by grade level and saved in a “backpack” for future reference. And, of course, it’s all in an online environment that’s kid-friendly and safer for children.

Info on everything from the red-legged frog to the U.S. Constitution is right at their fingertips. Need to reference the food pyramid? What about a map of Uzbekistan? It’s all there. Plus students can access neat tools like algebra tutorials, get feedback on their essays before handing them in, and play games that help prepare them for school.

Sneakers
Keep worn-down athletic shoes out of the landfill by sending them to Nike’s Reuse-A-Shoe program:

The rubber, foam and fabric will be recycled into materials for soccer fields, basketball courts and playgrounds across the country. Visit the Nike site to find a drop-off location near you.

Airline Miles
If you’re an infrequent flyer and the scattered miles you accrue will never get you that trip to Hawaii, consider handing over your stash to the Red Cross. Donated miles can transport volunteers and staff to disaster areas like New Orleans. Go online for instruction on how to give.

Pet Gear
Upgrading accessories like bowls, leash and cage? The humane Society recommends passing along your old ones to a local animal shelter, where they’ll benefit pets awaiting adoption If you’re not surer where to go, visit the organizations, website and click on “How to find your local animal shelter”

Luggage & Backpacks
Suitcases For Kids aims to supply every foster child in the country with a piece of travel gear (lots of kids have nothing but garbage bags for transporting their belongings). To donate backpacks, duffels or suitcases, check the site for a local drop-off spot.

Eyeglasses & Sunglasses
In some countries in Latin America, Asia and Africa, the price of glasses can exceed three months average salary. Unite For Sight channels donated glasses and shades to kids and adults in these areas. Fill out a quick form on its website and UFS will tell you where to send your specs.
